Pastor Cynthia has worked over 25 years in the nonprofit sector, with the Breese Youth Center, World Impact, Rescue Mission Alliance, Prison Fellowship, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and New City Parish Network of Churches in Inglewood, California.
She has held a variety of leadership roles in congregational settings, and ministry outreaches. She is affiliated with Lighthouse Church in Newbury Park, where she served on the Church Council, and led women’s ministry and Bible study small groups.
For the past 16 years, Pastor Cynthia has been employed with Joni and Friends International Disability Center in Agoura Hills, and has worked in various capacities. Presently, she is the Director of Spiritual Formation and Care.
Pastor Cynthia is a dynamic itinerate preacher and speaker who has inspired intergenerational, diverse audiences both domestic and international.
Her travels include visits to Prague, Czech Republic; London, England; Peru (Lima and Arequipa), Haiti (Port-au-Prince) and Guyana, where she provided missionary outreach and training in conjunction with various ministries.
Pastor Cynthia has taught devotion on the Mount of Olives in Israel, and has been a frequent guest on the Voice of Hope International Radio Program, Discoveries in Prayer; as well as radio broadcasts, television, videos, and podcasts with Joni Eareckson Tada, founder of Joni and Friends.
Pastor Cynthia is also the founder of Sinsau Ministries Inc., whose mission is to provide practical, spiritual, and educational mentorship for young men and women transitioning from foster care. Website: HERE.
Eloise Cohen’s husband, Chuck, and their children, grandchildren, and other family members and loved ones, on her death. A memorial service will be planned and no dates have been set.

1. Observe 2 PM Tuesday deadline for the following Thursday’s release (unless by advance arrangement).
2. DO NOT PRE-FORMAT MATERIAL. A text or Word file and photos or artwork in jpg or png format, along with any notes you’d like to make about presentation, links, etc. are preferred and will work best to get your message across.
More than HALF of our audience read the newsletter on their phones. The difficulty in reading PDFs on mobile devices was a key reason we switched to the new online format. By presenting information in a PDF, you are making it much harder for them to see it.
3. Keep the number of outside links to a maximum of 3. If your material contains more than three links, we cannot guarantee they will all work.
4. DO NOT EMBED LINKS. Links in flyers, png’s and pdf’s will most likely NOT WORK in the newsletter. Supply the URL and a link will be added.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the SAM’s Tram service from Ascension has been pretty quiet. However, now that many of us have vaccines and feel more comfortable being out and about, it’s time to reintroduce the program! SAM’s Tram is Ascension’s Senior Adult Ministries transportation service. We match seniors from our congregation that need rides to local appointments with Ascension volunteers that are willing to drive.
RIDERS
If you’re a senior who needs a ride (or a caregiver for one), please contact me with the ride details. My contact info is at the end of the article. The more lead time you can give me — at least a week or two is best — the more likely I can find a driver for you. I’ll let you know either way. The service is free! If you feel compelled to give something, you can give your driver a dollar to go to Ascension’s Caring Ones to help the needy in our area.
DRIVERS
We’re always looking for more volunteer drivers to add to our roster. There is NO long-term commitment. I blast out detailed ride requests via e-mail to all of our drivers. You need only say “yes” to a ride that works for your schedule, and your only commitment is for that one ride. Many of us work and can only drive occasionally. That’s OK! The more drivers we have on our roster, the more likely we can fulfill a given request, and the workload gets spread around. This is a simple and effective ministry and we’d love to have you join us! Emma volunteered at middle school and high school at the Lutheran church she attended in Peoria, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. In high school, she worked at a day care center. At Cal Lu, she worked with students via the AmeriCorps fellowship program. And she experienced work in a range of areas of ministry including children’s ministry at a summer program at a Lutheran church in Dana Point.
While her immediate family is in Arizona, Emma does have relatives who live nearby, in the Pasadena area. As far as adjusting to California life, she says she’s loving the weather here “and being so close to the beach is really fun.”
As part of the interview process, Emma says that she and Pastor Julie “had a meeting and talked about the church and all the different goals, and talked about my own spirituality.” Then Emma led some faith-filled fun for 4th through 6th graders at the school. And it must have gone well indeed, for now she is jumping into children’s ministry duties at Ascension — already laying plans for Kids in Christ programming (4th through 6th grade), Sunday School, and will soon start “putting together the Christmas program.”
Pastor Julie is excited to have someone on board who loves kids and building relationships, has a good sense of children’s ministry, and a deep faith herself. She’ll be an asset! In fact, every reference Pastor Julie called was emphatic that we would be lucky to have Emma on our team, and we shouldn’t let her get away. Emma will be at the elementary school and ECC and in worship—if you see her, welcome her and start getting to know her! And of course, pray for her and our Children’s Ministry, too!
Pray, Advocate or Take Action this Jubilee Weekend
Jubilee USA needs our help to lift the voices of the faithful in defense of the world’s most vulnerable. Together, we can expand vaccine access across the world, fight climate change and achieve debt relief and increase aid for developing countries for pandemic recovery efforts. We are joining hundreds of faith communities taking action this month through this drive. Everyone can decide how they’d like to participate – from offering a prayer for vaccine distribution or increased aid for developing countries to calling members of Congress, signing a petition, hosting a discussion group or other activities.
As coronavirus wreaks havoc around the globe, we need to make a strong call to bring the world together for a just and equitable recovery. As you are likely aware, Ascension is a Jubilee congregation – and Pastor Steve is Board Co-Chair — and our Southwest California Synod is a Jubilee synod.
Jubilee has been instrumental in the cancellation of more than $130 billion in debt for the world’s poorest countries. These are debts often racked up by malign government actors in these countries but left for innocent citizenry to cope with. Jubilee follows Jesus’ sermon in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 4:14-21) in reading Isaiah 61 and proclaiming the year of the Lord’s favor, the year of — a year of freedom and debts being cancelled.

High School Youth Group Enjoys Farm Fun, Service, Sunsets, Mountain Tops, and mostly, Lots of Laughter and God’s Hand in it All.

“Sometimes the best way to see God is by looking backwards.”
This was something a speaker at the recent Youth Gathering at Luther Glen said on our last day of camp, and as I look back on our week, I definitely see the hand of God in everything we did.
At Bible Study this past Sunday, as we shared Highs and Lows, each youth who went on the trip, along with myself, listed our trip as a high for the week, recounting the fun times, and admitted that one low was simply the adjustment of coming back home, even though we were all glad to be home and get some rest! I know that in my mind I’ve continued to hear our jokes, sometimes even saying them out loud when no one near me would get it, and have songs like “One Name Under Heaven,” “Reckless Love,” and “Knee, Knee, Clap, Clap” on repeat in my head as well. The week is one that will stay embedded positively in our memories and continue to bring us joy as we think back on it.
Each day was packed with activity and opportunities to connect with each other as well as people from all over California and places as far as North Dakota, Minnesota, Washington, and Hawaii. In this one week, we were able to enjoy farm animals and a new puppy, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, great praise music and speakers, games and conversation, Disneyland, The Palm Springs Tramway, a service day at Helping Hands in San Bernadino, and the local fun of Oak Glen with apple turnovers and axe throwing. Looking back, I think I saw God most in the way we all connected and got to know one another more and more each day. It’s not easy to hide behind your real self when spending a week together, which I believe is the beauty of going away together. We all see that it’s okay to be who we are and when we are, that’s when God and his love best shine through.
I am truly thankful for every person who went on the trip, every person we met, both near and far, and all the lasting connections and memories made.

It’s going to be a September to Remember – and October and November and onward, too, as the new church and school year unfolds. Even though it’s summer, let’s have a sneak peek now.
First, as you are already aware, we have our special September 10th event celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of our church and the 60th of the opening of Ascension Lutheran School. We’ll have one worship service only, at 10 AM, with service opportunities in connection with the day (see below). Outdoor festivities begin at 11. We’re talking live music, free Mr. Softee Ice Cream, climbing, face painting, games and more.
It’s a perfect opportunity to Invite friends, neighbors, colleagues and other acquaintances to come join us here! And that leads us into what will be our emphasis for the 2023-2024 year, as we take a closer look at our motto: Invite-Grow-Serve.
Expect sermon series focusing on each of the three parts, with that first word, Invite, providing an exploration of our call to welcome others.
Make a note: Remember, our contemporary worship service is going to move to 10:30 AM this fall, as is Adult Ed. This is so that we can create more space and time for fellowship and to welcome visitors.
Also this fall, expect to see a showcasing of our ministries that reach out into the world. After all, we’re not here to serve ourselves; we’re here to Serve others. It’s a great time to get involved with our Global Ministries Team, our Community Concerns Team, and others that give us great service opportunities.
In this way, we will certainly Grow. Get the Blessing, Be the Blessing.

Pastor Cynthia Berry is a native Californian, who grew up in Los Angeles. She is a mother of two young adults and is the daughter of Ascension members Allen and Lillian Carter.
Pastor Cynthia received a Master of Theology in Ministry with emphasis in youth and family culture, from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. She is an ordained minister with the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. Continued…
Eloise Cohen
We join in grieving Eloise Cohen, who passed away Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. She was a driving force, inspiration, and pillar of our church and a dear friend of many here. She was the leader of our Global Ministries Team, our Bread for the World advocacy, and our Matthew 25:35 ministry. She worked with refugees and interfaith friends, and was the organizer of numerous drives and missions. Her work in our local community and Cal Lutheran University earned her the gratitude of many.

The high-spirited band Fiddle Leaf (@fiddleleafmusic) will be playing tunes both Irish and pop at the festival. There will be a rock wall with monkey jumps, a bounce house, and a toddler bounce house. The latter is part of a toddler fun area being planned. There will be games, face-painting and free Mr. Softee Ice Cream. Stay tuned for more information on the party!
Sept. 10 is also the tenth anniversary of the ELCA’s “God’s work. Our hands” service day – and we are joining in with a food drive (see flyer this page), the packing of 300 Kits of Care for Lutheran World Relief, and home visits for seniors and others who are not able to make it to church.

Let Us Welcome New Eucharistic Ministers and Consider Training to Join Them
Please welcome Ron Rudrud, Beverly Selle and Ruth Rarick to Ascension’s Eucharistic Ministers team. Their installation will take place at the 9 AM service Aug. 13.
On Aug. 12, there will be training for the Eucharistic Ministry in Founders Hall. The class will take place from 8:30 AM until around noon. To join the class, or if you would simply like more information, please contact Pastor Steve Herder or Pastor Ron Cox (; cell 805-807-5257).
Eucharistic Ministers take the sacrament of Holy Communion from worship to share with those who are unable to come to the sanctuary. This does not take the place of pastoral visits, but supplements that ministry. By taking Communion to those who cannot worship with us, we are including them in the congregation’s worship. You are reminding them of God’s love and their congregation’s love and concern for them. Your time with them will be a continuation of the congregation’s worship.
On Sept. 9-10 – God’s Work Our Hands Sunday as well as Ascension’s anniversary celebration – we are hoping to bring Communion to as many of those who are unable to make it to in-person services as possible.
Ascension’s Eucharistic Ministry is now six years old, and has provided this special care for scores of our church family members who have been homebound or in care facilities — truly sharing God’s love.

Lutheran Social Services of Southern California Needs Helpers!
The Ascension Book Club meets the 3rd Thursday ofthe month at 1:30 PM in the Bethlehem Room, in the church office building. The group chooses books based on members’ interest and discussion is led by one of the members. Books vary from popular novels to nonfiction. Please feel free to join us–we are a friendly group.

If you’ve attended Women’s Monday Morning Bible Study before, we hope you’ll come back to our family again. And if you’ve never been a part of WMMBS, we hope this year will be your year to join us. We’re about 50 women strong (we meet in small groups) and we’re united by our love for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, our yearning to learn more about His will and His way and our care for each other.
The book of Acts is the focus of our study that begins Monday, Sept. 11, and continues Mondays through May 6, 2024. This year’s morning study will center on Warren W. Wiersbe’s two-book series on Acts, “Be Dynamic” and “Be Daring.” Cost is $30, payable at registration, and includes the two books.
The Thursday evening Zoom group (contingent on at least five participants) will also study Acts, but will use N.T. Wright’s single-book study, “N.T. Wright for Everybody: Acts.” Registration is required, but no payment as each participant will purchase her own book through Christianbook.com or Amazon ($8.99 or $9.45 respectively).
Sign-ups for both are on now — and end Aug. 13 (registration deadline).
